Division of Natural Resources/Legislative Agenda
Sportsmen again had to battle to protect hunting and fishing license money. HB 4731 had to be amended to prevent unused hunting and fishing license dollars from being rolled into the State General Fund at the end of each year.
An attempt was made to place a constitutional amendment on the November ballot. This amendment would protect the use of hunting and fishing license money. This failed because of being blocked by the House leadership.
At the second quarter Game Commission meeting, the Commissioners passed a resolution allowing the Class RG tag to be used for killing antlerless deer during the buck gun season. This would be in effect in all 31 counties where antlerless hunting is allowed.
This action by the Commissioners created a heated debate between all parties with a stake in deer management. The WVBA joined this heated and controversial debate in opposition to the measure. As a result of the controversy, the Game Commission held a special hearing in July. After the meeting it was announced that the 31 county number would be reduced to 12 on both public and private land.
At the fourth quarter Game Commission, WVBA President John Edman expressed the hope that the DNR and sportsmen organizations could work more closely together, rather than drawing battle lines over issues of disagreement.
The Muzzleloaders Association requests that the 14 Bear Archery season counties in southern W.Va. be designated as a “primitive weapons season”.
